7-Zip is an open source file archiver. 7-Zip uses .7 z file name extension, but can read and write in some other format for example, RAR (read only), zip, and tar. 7-Zip can be used either through a graphical interface, command line, as well as Microsoft Windows shell integration. 7-Zip was first released in 1999 and is still actively developed by Igor Pavlov.
